PhD Title: Cell Biology of Ageing in AMD

We are offering a full–time, 3-year PhD studentship to research pathobiological mechanisms contributing to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
At the heart of this project is the goal to explore how ageing contributes to cellular dysfunction in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in the context of AMD. This research could uncover new pathways linking aging to AMD, identify potential therapeutic targets, and pave the way for treatments to restore vision in patients. The outcomes will not only deepen our understanding of AMD but also contribute to broader efforts to tackle aging-related diseases.
Applicants should hold or expect to receive a minimum upper-second degree or equivalent in a life science degree. A Master’s degree or previous lab-based research experience is desirable.

This full-time studentship is funded for three years by the NIHR Moorfields BRC( https://moorfieldsbrc.nihr.ac.uk/ ) and is inclusive of UK home rate tuition fees, laboratory costs and an annual salary stipend starting at £22,000. International students: please see the details in the ‘Eligibility’ item below.
The full studentship (tuition fees and salary stipend) is eligible for candidates classified as UK students (please see ‘Tuition fee classification’ on this page: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate/tuition-fees ). Applicants that incur overseas fees are welcome to apply. Outstanding international candidates have the option of obtaining full funding, covering the overseas tuition fees, based on a competitive selection process by the department under the UCL scheme: International Scholar Awards for Doctoral Training (ISAD).

Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate is expected to:
Establish readouts for age-linked RPE dysfunction relevant for AMD
Develop cellular tools using RPE cells
Establish readouts for age-linked RPE dysfunction
Conduct transcriptional and epigenetic analysis
Develop in silico models of gene regulatory and cell signalling networks
Work in collaboration with other researchers
Prepare progress reports
Prepare presentations
Travel for collaboration and other meetings or conferences
Prepare manuscripts for submission to international peer-reviewed journals
Contribute to the overall activities of the research team, department and be aware of UCL policies
Person Specification
A good undergraduate degree (2.1 or above or the equivalent EU/overseas degree) and/or an MSc in a biomedical field
Experience in ophthalmic research
Excellent bioinformatics and computational skills
Experience with biological model systems
Experience with transcriptomics analysis
Excellent methodological skills and project planning
High proficiency in written and spoken English is required
Very strong work ethic, with the ability to think creatively and work both individually and within a team
Self-driven with a desire to develop a career in bioscience
