About the Project This project will be undertaken in collaboration with Data Dynamics Ltd and includes a minimum 3-month placement based at the Industry Partner's premises. The aim of the project is to provide an low-cost methodology for farmers to increase crop yields while reducing the environmental impact and enhancing biodiversity and wildlife. A critical current issue for agricultural production across the whole of the UK is the management of spatially discrete areas of crop infestation, drought and lack of nutrients. Current farm management practices are extremely wasteful as entire fields are sprayed rather than just affected patches. This project will work closely with an innovative company involved in the application of AI to the agri-tech sector and a number of local agricultural stakeholders on two current crop pathogens, a weed infestation problem, blackgrass, which significantly impacts cereal farmers and Virus Yellows disease which is currently severely impacting the UK Sugar Beet industry. The project will involve the acquisition of a comprehensive, accurate and detailed multi- sensor, multi-platform remote sensing imagery dataset using a range of state-of-the-art ground- ,UAV- and satellite-mounted hyperspectral remote sensing datasets acquired under highly controlled conditions at plot - to - field scales over a growing cycle of crops affected by blackgrass and Virus Yellows Disease. A detailed ground sampling will be implemented with the spatial and temporal resolution to provide a robust validation of the results of the remote sensing study. Working with industry and academic supervisors the student will develop novel explainable AI models to probabilistically detect early signs of pest infestations and diseases in sugar beet and blackgrass infestation; incorporate AI-driven phenology models, spread models and weather and climate data into the system to produce an AI-driven ensemble system for holistic and robust sugar beet health assessments and blackgrass infestation. The project will provide an assessment of the feasibility of implementing continuous ecosystem health monitoring and near real-time vulnerability assessments for up-to-date risk management. A tax-free annual stipend at the standard UKRI rate (£19,237 for 2024/25 entry), research costs and tuition fees at UK rate Academic year: 2025/26 Open to: International (including EU) and UK (home) students The studentships are fully funded for four years, and you must complete your PhD in four years. You'll receive the UKRI minimum doctoral stipend per year for your living costs, which is paid to you in regular instalments. International students will need to have sufficient funds to cover the costs of their student visa( https://www.gov.uk/student-visa ), NHS health surcharge( https://www.gov.uk/healthcare-immigration-application/how-much-pay ), travel insurance and travel to the UK as these are excluded from UKRI funding.
