PhD Position in High-Temperature Critical Metal Production and Recycling
PhD Open Position2024Fall
Application time:2024.09.12deadline
Organizer
The University of Queensland
Description
About the Project Critical metals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, gold, silver and other are essential for the manufacture of electrical and electronic devices and technologies, and new battery materials needed for technological development and the global transition to sustainable energy systems. There are major technical challenges associated with the industrial scale high temperature production and recycling of these metals. Systematic research program involving experimental phase equilibria investigations and advanced thermodynamic computer modelling studies on high temperature chemical systems involving metals, oxides, sulphides and molten salts is under way at the Pyrometallurgy Innovation Laboratory (Pyrosearch) focused on development and implementation of advanced methodologies and scientific tools used to predict complex chemical reactions, and thus provide the industry with the vital fundamental scientific information and tools needed to be able to design and improve new, more efficient critical metal production and recycling technologies. The aims of this PhD project are to implement modern advanced research methods and tools in industrial practice at BHP Olympic Dam copper smelter and to train future industrial research and development professionals focused on optimization of the existing and development of new high temperature extraction and recycling technologies for critical metals. We are seeking enthusiastic candidate interested in cutting edge applied research and in future industrial research and development career. There is opportunity for the successful candidate to join BHP Olimpic Dam R&D on completion of PhD. You will work as part of the Pyrometallurgy Laboratory team as well as some time at an industrial site. The project will involve undertaking experiments, advanced analysis and thermodynamic modelling in support of the industrial process optimisation. Research environment Pyrometallurgy Innovation Laboratory (Pyrosearch) The Pyrometallurgy Innovation Laboratory at The University of Queensland has an outstanding international reputation for the high quality of research output. The Laboratory undertakes fundamental and applied research, funded through competitive Government grants and by world-wide consortia of leading international metallurgical, recycling and advanced materials industrial companies. More details on the research activities at Pyrosearch are on our website.
