A PhD position is available in the recently established group of Prof. Benjamin Towbin at the Institute of Cell Biology, University of Bern, Switzerland. The group studies organismal growth control, combining quantitative experiments with C. elegans and mathematical modelling (see http://www.towbinlab.org ). Project description: Correctly sized organs are crucial for the proper functioning of an organism. For example, even small discrepancies between the length of our legs severely hinder motility, and overgrowth of cardiac muscle tissues increases the risk of fatal heart failure. Therefore, different organs need to precisely coordinate their growth with each other. The goal of this project is to learn how molecular pathways ensure the robust development of appropriate organ size proportions. To address this question, the project will use time-lapse microscopy of hundreds of individuals of C. elegans in parallel to measure the stochastic differences in organ growth among genetically identical individuals. We will interrogate how fluctuations in growth amplify to differences in size, and if there are feedback mechanisms that prevent excessive size divergence between organs. Using tissue-specific perturbation of molecular pathways, such as mTOR and insulin signalling, we will test how growth control of different organs is interconnected. Finally, the project will seek novel factors involved in organ growth coordination by a genetic screen. We offer: You will join a young and international research team and obtain extensive training in quantitative live imaging, in computational image and data analysis, as well as in genome engineering and high throughput screening. Our laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure for the planned research, including a high-end live imaging setup and a computational cluster for image processing. The student will be enrolled at the GCB Graduate School (www.gcb.unibe.ch) with access to advanced courses and an interactive student network. As the capital of Switzerland, Bern provides a high standard of living and is located one hour from major alpine resorts.

The project is fully funded for the duration of 4 years. The student will receive a generous stipend by the Swiss National Science foundation (CHF 47’040 p.a.).
