About the Project
This project will develop click arylation as a new way of labelling biomolecules for chemical biology application. Building on fundamental discoveries in arylation and skeletal editing in the Greaney laboratory, where sulfonamides and sulfinamides are employed as aryl donors under exceptionally mild conditions, the project seeks to establish a new Click Chemistry modality for widespread application in bioconjugation. By capturing innovation in fundamental chemical reactivity we hope to build an array of organic chemistry tools that can be used to interrogate cellular processes through labelling, imaging, and control of biomolecule function.
The project will take place in the Greaney (organic chemistry), Green (biocatalysis and enzymology), and Webb (biological photophysics) laboratories, who all share an interest in applying creative organic chemistry to problems in chemical biology. The PhD studentship will provide genuine multidisciplinary training: synthetic chemistry, protein production, purification, and functionalisation, assay development, fluorescence imaging techniques, all with an emphasis on handling polar substrates that are influential in medicinal chemistry drug discovery campaigns.

These studentships are available to UK and international applicants, and provide funding for tuition fees and stipend at the UKRI rate, subject to eligibility, for four years. This does not include any costs associated with relocation. This scheme is open to both the UK and international applicants.

申请要求
Applicants must have obtained or be about to obtain a minimum Upper Second class UK honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of science, engineering or technology.
International applicants
We are only able to offer a limited number of full studentships to applicants outside the UK. Therefore, full studentships will only be awarded to exceptional quality international candidates due to the competitive nature of this scheme.
