About the Project
This project is one of a number that are in competition( https://www.bath.ac.uk/campaigns/university-research-studentship-award-ursa/ ) for funding from the University of Bath URSA competition, for entry in September 2025.
Overview of the Research:
The evaporation of sessile droplets (i.e. liquid droplets on solid surfaces) is a fascinating multifaceted problem that is currently a “hot topic” of research in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering as a result of the combination of interesting and challenging fundamental science it involves and the wide range of physical situations and practical applications it occurs in. The aim of the current project is to use a judicious combination of analytical (often asymptotic) and simple numerical methods to build on our previous work in this area to gain insight into a range of phenomena associated with the evaporation of a sessile droplet, including (but not limited to) the deposit patterns left behind as a particle-laden droplet evaporates and the inhibiting effect of confinement and/or the presence of other droplets on the evolution, and hence the lifetime, of an evaporating droplet, as well as the problem of droplet condensation. Some background knowledge of fluid mechanics and/or mathematical modelling and analysis of physical systems would be advantageous.

Candidates may be considered for a University of Bath studentship tenable for 3.5 years. Funding covers tuition fees, a stipend (£19,237 p/a in 2024/5) and access to a training support budget.

Applicants should hold, or expect to receive, a First Class or good Upper Second Class UK Honours degree (or the equivalent) in a relevant subject. A master’s level qualification would also be advantageous.
