PhD直招介绍
About the Project This fully funded, 4-year PhD project is part of a competition funded by the BBSRC EASTBIO Doctoral Training Partnership( https://www.findaphd.com/phds/program/bbsrc-eastbio-doctoral-training-partnership-call-for-applications-for-2024/?i2p1048 ). A long-standing paradox in evolutionary biology is how some introduced species can manage to rapidly adapt and diversify when they colonise a new environment. Theory would predict that the few founding pioneer individuals that invade a new location will go through a population bottleneck that erodes their genetic diversity, that in turn should compromise the viability of the population and hamper any capacity to establish and adapt to the novel environmental conditions. Yet there are numerous examples where invasive alien species become establish then outcompete native fauna, novel crop pests and zoonotic diseases emerging then spreading and relict populations remaining viable over time. Does this highlight that the traditional view of how genetic variation is lost across the genome needs revisiting, or that we need to explore new routes through which genetic diversity can rapidly be generated? This PhD project will investigate the potential role that transposable elements (TE) can play in generating genetic innovation. TE are jumping genes that when they replicate through a host’s genome, can also disrupt host coding sequences, affect gene regulation, force recombination, induce structural variation such as gene duplications. TE activity is responsive to environmental stress, and thus the process of colonisation of a new environment, in itself, may stimulate TE proliferation that drives host adaptive potential. The project will focus on relic populations of brown rats, black rats and water voles that have been marooned on islands around the world. The student will receive extensive training and gain comprehensive experience of state-of-the-art, long-read DNA sequencing approaches and bioinformatic analysis to map the genome-wide landscape of genetic diversity for multiple individuals from different populations of the three species. These data will be used to examine how genetic diversity has been eroded across the genome according to gene function, and determine the interplay between TE activity and genome architecture in relic populations relative to model genomes. The project offers outstanding training opportunities in the very latest genomics techniques and bioinformatic and evolutionary analyses, coupled with a programme of broad core and generic skills development that is central to the EastBio-DLA training programme. The student will become part of a dynamic, vibrant and supportive multidisciplinary research group and broader postgraduate community, and have the opportunity to make a major contribution to our understanding of fundamental issues in evolutionary biology and applied aspects of invasive species management. For further project information please contact the lead project supervisor by selecting the first listed name at the top of this advert and sending your enquiry.
