About the Project The ParaHox genes are a key, but understudied, focus for animal evolutionary development biology (evo-devo). They are widely conserved across the animal kingdom with major roles in patterning the development of the central nervous system (CNS) and gastrointestinal tract (gut). These genes are also renowned for being the evolutionary sister, or paralogue, to the Hox genes. Both the Hox and ParaHox genes are frequently organised as a gene cluster and exhibit the striking phenomenon of collinearity, whereby the order of the genes in the cluster corresponds to the gene activation sequence along the anterior-posterior axis of the embryo. ParaHox genes thus provide an excellent system with which to explore the links between genome organisation, gene regulation and the evolution of development (evo-devo). This project will focus on the chordates, including both vertebrates and invertebrates, to understand the origin of the vertebrates and the roles played by the ParaHox genes in the evolution of the CNS and gut at this major transition in animal evolution. The species that we focus on are; - Amphioxus, as the early lineage of chordates that has retained many ancestral features of genome organisation and embryogenesis and which possesses an intact well-ordered ParaHox cluster. - The ascidian Ciona, which is amenable to detailed investigation of gene regulation mechanisms and provides an example of ParaHox cluster break-up. - Chicken, as a vertebrate exemplar that has accessible embryogenesis and techniques available to dissect gene regulatory mechanisms, alongside being a typical vertebrate in having experienced the two rounds of whole genome duplication that occurred early in vertebrate evolution and produced duplications of ParaHox clusters and genes and likely contributed to vertebrate evolutionary innovations.
