About the Project

Project description:
This project is focused on scale-resolving simulations (large-eddy and direct numerical simulation) combined with analysis to understand complex phenomena in high-speed boundary layers, from transonic up to hypersonic. This is important for next-generation flight vehicles, including atmospheric entry craft. Whilst much is now understood in terms of flow instability, transition to turbulence and large-scale unsteadiness for canonical attached and separated flow (two-dimensional, smooth surfaces), there are many unanswered questions in more complicated scenarios where flows are three-dimensional in the mean, surfaces are non-smooth and where strong shock waves are present.
You will join a group of PhD students and post-doctoral researchers using high performance computing to advance understanding of high-speed aerodynamics. Over the past decade we have developed efficient open-source software that enables us to run large numerical simulations with billions grid points on mixed computer architectures including CPU and GPU machines. A current project is preparing the code set for the next generation of exascale computing, including development of tools for analysis of large data sets. 申请要求
We are particularly looking for UK or EU nationality students, either having or expecting to achieve a first-class degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering. You should have studied fluid mechanics or aerodynamics to a high level, have an aptitude for computational work and have carried out successful project work
A very good undergraduate degree (first class honours degree, or its international equivalent).
